.9mm vs .45 Empty .9mm vs .45

I've heard arguments both ways, one saying that .45 is best because it has more stopping power. Others argue that they like the .9mm because it has enough stopping power and is easier to control. From a law enforcement standpoint most agencies carry .45, unless you're a Fed who seem to prefer .9mm. I personally prefer .45 myself, but I'm curios to hear arguments from both sides as to which is better, or perhaps each has it's own purpose. What do you think?

Personally, I like the stopping power of a .45. I remember a photograph of an armed robbery suspect, who was shot over 30 times with 9mm. A good deal of these shots had been placed in center mass. That picture really stuck with me.

That said, a lot depends on the ammo you are using.

The gun that you can shoot well and feels comfortable is the gun you should choose. Research your ammo options and load up appropriately.

And, as always, carry extra mags, as things never go as you think they will in a fire fight. This goes for .45, 9mm or whatever. You can have multiple suspects, or a prolonged gun fight where your nearest back up or police officer is a long ways away, as is the case here in Lane County.

I originally qualified with a .9 in my first firearms class, but then later in the Sheriff Academy we all used .45 since that seems to be the favorite among local law enforcement.

I agree that you need to find what you're comfortable with and do your homework. Not all ammunition or firearms are equal. Definitely carry extra ammo and magazines as well, especially on duty since you never know how much you might need.
