Fire Starting - The Bow Technique

Post by 0001 on 3/11/2015, 15:13

The Bow Technique seems to be one of the Holy-Grails of fire starting techniques. I've never tried it myself but I know several people that have with minimal success. I found this video that seems to break it down pretty clearly. Has anyone tried the bow technique, were you successful at it?

I've found far more success with a book of matches, LOL. Seriously, though, I've never had any luck with that technique. Maybe I'll give it a try, this weekend, in my down time. I'm loving this retirement thing!

If you actually get it to work, let me know because I want to film it! The only person I've EVER seen get it to work was an Eagle Scout who was also in SAR. There are several other very experienced outdoorsmen that have tried it, and have failed. I think it has to be done just right or it doesn't work.

Personally i have never even come close with the bow drill, but i have come close, very close, with a hand drill. I find for me that the bow drill has too many moving parts that have to work flawlessly. But for now, i just don't have the skills... XD

With the hand drill Cody ALMOST got it to work, it was smoking quite a bit but I think the wood wasn't dry/dense enough. I still want to see someone get a bow to work, that would be sooo cool. And not in a controlled environment, actually out in the woods.

I have found a website that breaks down the fire starting to a easy to understand more scientific side of bow/hand drills. and it also has a lot of other awesome primitive survival information. http://www.primitiveways.com/index.html
