I would love to see more about how to be a survivor without spending a lot of money. Most of us live on budgets and can't afford to spend a fortune on expensive firearms and gear, or have a year's worth of food stockpiled, along with massive amounts of ammunition, etc. I ran across this article, today, and thought it was fitting:

That's really interesting, rather than taking a "stock up on everything" approach, they are advocating learning the skills that will get you through the situation. Less of an emphasis on actually having stuff. I like that, I think it would be great for Survival Guide.

So if we were going to start filming some episodes, what kind of topics would we want to cover first do you think?

I just sent some "off the top of my head" to the "Brainstorming" section. Warning, some of it may be a little "out there" LOL.

Here are some ideas:

Generators. Everybody says you should have one, but I haven't seen much on how to choose, operate and maintain them.

Camel Baks (and other gear, actually). How the heck do you get them clean?

I'd like to see more practical use of gear. Again, everybody wants to carry everything but the kitchen sink in their BOB's or EDC bags, but I doubt most people know how to use each item effectively. For instance, window punches. Should be self-explanatory, but there are different types of punches. How to cut a seatbelt in a crash. How to use handheld radios.

We could come up with a nice list of skills everyone should have, then work on small projects for each one, as we go along. One step at a time, you know? Does that make sense? The potential for material would be endless.

This is perfect! I love these ideas and I think we should be able to do them pretty easily. I also want to do shelter building, snow shelters, land-navigation, and more in-depth fire building.

So this is the list so far (Not in any order):
-Shelter building (Debris/Snow)"
-In-Depth Fire Building
-Land navigation (Map, Compass, GPS)
-Generators, use and maintenance
-How to clean hydration packs
-Window punches
-Seatbelt cutters
-Proper use of radios and communication devices

This is plenty of material for starters. Next we need to order them, and come up with a filming schedule. Then we just need to do a little research and film, film, film! Smile

Okay, sounds great!

Oh yeah, we should add info regarding pets, as well, prepping stuff for emergencies, how to take care of them in a crisis. If we need visual aids, we have the critters.

Pets is a critical aspect that is often overlooked. I think it is something we should cover, but I'm definitely going to have to do some research since I'm not actually that up to speed on pet procedures.

Okay awesome! I'll start getting together a filming schedule, and once your uniforms come in and I get them prepped, we can start filming!

That goes against everything I've ever been taught in relation to fire building.

We HAVE to try it!

I know, right? I tried it in my woodstove, and it worked like a charm! I'm as shocked as you are.

Really?? That is very interesting, we've always been taught that fire burns up and to put your fuel above the flame. This is very interesting, I'm curious to play around with it and see if it will even work with wet material which would be useful for survival situations.

Sounds good. I was taught the same thing you were about fire, but at least in the stove, with dry kindling/wood, it worked very well.

Okay cool, I want to hit fire building again soon more in depth with Survival Guide, so we can add this to the list of things to film!

Sweet!!! I'm hoping to start filming as soon as week after next, we have all these ideas we need to start getting them done! Plus, I just ran out of pre-filmed episodes for the page, so we need to film more stuff or I won't be able to add videos every week! Not to mention I haven't put out an episode of Survival Guide in ages... :/

WOW!!! I need to try this upside-down fire! Very Happy I suppose it probably works as well as it does because it would draw the oxygen up and through it, and give it an advantage over a fire that is built in a hole. the trick would be getting enough small stuff on top to create a small bed of coals that would ignite the pieces below. If i had found this a week ago i could have tried it last weekend. Oh well... next time...

I know right?!?! I'm excited to see it in real life to see how it works. If it does work well it might be an option to look into for SAR training! I really want to get a good video of it too.
